Helping Protect ECU Credit Union Members from Unforeseen Events and Checkbook Errors.

Unforeseen circumstances happen to all of us. Unfortunately, they seem to happen at just the wrong time. Whether it is an unanticipated car repair, a mathematical mistake while balancing your checkbook or other unexpected expenses, these situations can cause stress and embarrassment and can impact personal financial management.

We at ECU Credit Union understand these events can happen to all of us. That’s why we implemented a flexible Overdraft Protection Plan which includes the use of Courtesy Pay.

This program can provide qualified members:

  • Protection from merchant returned check charges
  • Protection from late fees because you were short of funds to pay a bill
  • Protection from the embarrassment of declined ATM/Debit transactions
  • Protection of your good credit and name.

What is Courtesy Pay? Courtesy Pay is a benefit offered to qualified members with a checking account that will provide a limited level of protection from non-sufficient fund fee (NSF) returned checks and declined ATM/Debit Card authorizations. It is not a loan, it is a courtesy extended to qualified members in good standing to cover items, up to a $1,500 limit.

We pay overdrafts at our discretion, which means we do not guarantee that we will always authorize and pay any type of transaction.

Is there a charge for Courtesy Pay? There is no charge to have Courtesy but if Courtesy Pay is used to pay an item creating a negative balance in the account we will assess a $25.00 Courtesy Pay fee for each item paid.

Accounts without Courtesy Pay or accounts that have exceed their Courtesy Pay limit will have their items returned as NSF and the account will be assessed a $25.00 NSF; ATM / Debit Card transactions will be declined.

How do I sign up for Courtesy Pay?  You do not sign up,  Courtesy Pay is an automatic enrollment offered to members in good standing actively using their checking account.  In most cases payroll deposit or direct deposit is required.

What if I do not want Courtesy Pay?  At anytime you may opt out of Courtesy Pay by submitting in writing a request to "Opt Out" of Courtesy Pay.

How will the recent Regulatory changes effect my Courtesy Pay Benefits?

Currently if you have Courtesy Pay we will authorize and pay ATM and everyday Debit Card transactions using  Courtesy Pay funds.  Doing this allows us to approve transactions when you do not have enough funds in your checking account to cover the transaction.  If your account becomes overdrawn when the transaction posts to your account, we will charge your checking account a $25.00 Courtesy Pay fee.

Effective August 15, 2010: We will not authorize and pay ATM and everyday Debit Card transactions unless you authorize us to do so by "Opting In".  If you do not "Opt In", your ATM and everyday Debit card transactions will be declined if you do not have the funds available in your checking account.

How do I Opt In?

Complete a Courtesy Pay Opt In Authorization (click here for the form) and fax it to 727-393-0127 or mail it to:  P. O. Box 4818, Seminole, FL 3375-4818.  For additional information please contact us at 1-800-382-2400.

Note:  Even if you do not "Opt In", your account may still become overdrawn if the merchant authorizes an amount smaller than the transaction amount, which is common practice for gas and other similar type transactions.  ECU Credit Union recommends keeping a register to track your account balances.  If you need assistance setting up or maintaining your check register please contact an ECU associate.
