During June, we observe Elder Abuse Awareness Month to shine a light on the troubling and often hidden issue affecting millions of older adults worldwide. Elder abuse can take many forms. It could be physical, emotional, or financial, and it could be due to neglect or to exploitation. Often, elder abuse goes unreported as a result of fear, shame, or isolation.
This month is a time to educate ourselves about the signs of abuse and the importance of speaking up. Whether it’s checking in on an elderly neighbor, supporting a caregiver, or learning how to identify and report suspected abuse, every action counts.
Let’s honor and protect the dignity, rights, and well-being of our elders. Together, we can create a safer, more respectful world for people of all ages.
At ECU Credit Union, protecting the financial well-being of you and your loved ones is a top priority. Take this time to raise awareness of financial exploitation and other forms of abuse that disproportionately affect older adults.
Did you know? Financial exploitation is the most common form of elder abuse, often going unnoticed until significant damage is done. Scams, fraud, and manipulation by trusted individuals can leave lifelong impacts. Recognizing elder financial abuse early can help prevent significant harm.
Learn the warning signs of financial abuse
- Unexplained financial changes: Large withdrawals, unexpected fund transfers, or missing assets.
- Altered banking practices: Adding new names to accounts or unusual attempts to wire money.
- Unpaid bills despite sufficient funds: Sudden non-sufficient fund activity or unexplained purchases.
- New "friends" or caregivers: Someone isolating the elder or influencing financial decisions.
- Confusion about financial matters: Difficulty recalling transactions or explaining financial decisions.
- Pressure to sign financial documents: Coercion to change wills, power of attorney, or beneficiary information.
Check in regularly with older family members
Social isolation is a risk factor for abuse. Frequent, caring conversations can help catch issues early—and offer essential emotional support.
